Pssst… The cocktail actually appeared on the scene well before prohibition hit America in 1920, we know martinis were being mixed by “Professor” Jerry Thomas at the Occidental Hotel in San Franscisco as far back as 1862, but it wasn’t until the long 13 years of prohibition that the cocktail really came into its own.
With prohibition banning the manufacture, sale, transportation, import and export of ‘intoxicating liquors’ it didn’t take long before the underworld moved in and set up illegal drinking dens called ‘speakeasies’, supplied with their own bootlegged hooch and moonshine. In order to cover up the rough taste of this bootlegged booze, people had to resort to mixing the spirits with juices, syrups and various other infusions and soon the art of the cocktail making was well revered.
Now-a-days at Prohibition we don’t need to mask the taste of our supreme quality beverages and the cocktail is no-longer a necessity but an art form, one that our talented in-house mixologists have made their own.
Using the finest ingredients from the best of spirits to the freshest of fruit juices our cocktail menu boasts a world beating selection of cocktails.
To be honest at Prohibition we’re a bit cocktail crazy and you’ll often find our mixologists experimenting with new combinations and flavours or just adding new dimensions to existing classic recipes. We’re driven by a passion to create the best and we’re proud to be part of the ongoing evolution of the cocktail. It started back in 1920 with prohibition the nasty anti-liquor law and continues today with Prohibition - the rather fantastic bar and grill.
